UK–Bangladesh EnRICH Project: Advancing Flood Forecasting and Disaster Preparedness

Bangladesh is stepping into a new era of flood forecasting and disaster management with the launch of the EnRICH Project, a joint initiative between the United Kingdom and Bangladesh. The project aims to enhance real-time flood forecasting and early-warning systems across flood-prone districts, including Sylhet, Sunamganj, Cumilla, and Feni.

Set to run from September 2025 to March 2026, EnRICH brings together the UK Met Office and relevant Bangladeshi agencies to implement advanced, data-driven forecasting technologies. Through a new Decision Support System (DSS), local authorities will receive timely and precise flood warnings, significantly reducing the uncertainty and last-minute chaos that previously affected vulnerable communities.

The project goes beyond technology, emphasizing disaster risk reduction and community resilience. Officials highlighted that EnRICH represents a landmark step in Bangladesh’s disaster preparedness, equipping local administrations and populations to respond effectively to flood events while safeguarding lives and livelihoods.

Experts note that by integrating technology, real-time data, and administrative coordination, EnRICH is set to transform Bangladesh’s flood forecasting capabilities into a modern, reliable, and sustainable system. The initiative has already drawn attention at the international level as a model for climate adaptation and disaster management in flood-prone regions.

With the EnRICH Project in place, Bangladesh’s most vulnerable regions can expect earlier warnings, better preparedness, and reduced losses, making this collaboration a significant milestone in the country’s ongoing efforts to enhance resilience against climate-induced disasters.
