Machu Picchu: Tourism Rebounds Amid Transport Disruptions in Peru

Machu Picchu, the iconic Inca citadel in Peru, continues to captivate global travelers as tourism rebounds strongly in 2025. In October alone, the UNESCO World Heritage site welcomed approximately 149,977 visitors, surpassing pre-pandemic levels and reaffirming its status as the country’s top tourist attraction. The resurgence reflects both growing international interest and Peru’s efforts to revitalize its tourism sector after years of pandemic-related disruptions

However, the renewed influx of visitors has coincided with challenges in transport logistics. Recently, a dispute over bus services to the citadel left hundreds of tourists stranded, as rocks blocked train tracks connecting nearby towns to Machu Picchu. The incident affected around 900 visitors, highlighting the vulnerability of tourism infrastructure to political and social unrest. Authorities launched emergency measures to evacuate stranded tourists, emphasizing the need for reliable transport coordination alongside rising visitor numbers.

Despite these hurdles, Machu Picchu remains a symbol of Peru’s rich cultural heritage and natural beauty. Experts note that while tourism recovery is encouraging for the local economy, sustainable management and robust infrastructure are crucial to ensure visitor safety and protect the ancient site. The combination of increasing tourism and occasional transport disruptions underscores the delicate balance between heritage preservation and modern accessibility.

As Machu Picchu attracts more travelers worldwide, Peru faces the dual challenge of accommodating demand while safeguarding one of the world’s most treasured historical landmarks.
